Sell More Books By Doing Two Things

Hey, what’s a great way to sell more books?

I know!

Blast your social media feed, constantly, with every detail about your new (or old) book from the brand-new cover straight from the artist to that chapter you wrote that you made cry.  If you get a good review:  Blast.  If you get a bad review:  Blast.  If you see another writer get a deal:  Talk about your book and how great it is.  Just like the most boring person at every party you’ve ever been to who did nothing but talk about themselves.

‘Cause you’ll sell more books.


You will not.  You will become a boor and people will tire of you and you will actually sell less books.

Which is not what you want to do.

You want to sell more books.  So, here’s how:

Be interesting.

I know, easier said than done.  Not really.  Technology can help you be interesting.  My guess is that if you’re already filling up pages and pages of books then you’re probably an interesting person.  Or, at least, you have interesting things to say.  You definitely have strong opinions.  Writing books requires that.  So, the next step is you have to show people how interesting you actually are by sharing yourself with people.  Here are some ideas:  Buy a big boat and tell people how great it is.   People love boats.  I do, at least.  All you need is a million dollars.  Or you could hang out with celebrities like Andy Weir does.  All you need is a phenomenal bestseller that Matt Damon wants to make into this year’s “It” movie.

Okay, even I admit those two options present some difficulties.  So, here’s what I did to be more interesting.  I started playing Dungeons and Dragons.  Yeah, that game.  Believe it or not, it’s going through a renaissance right now and all the hippest people (Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day) are playing it. There’re even live streams on and YouTube.  With all the Wonders of Tomorrow (Cup your hands and say that like a second-rate tragedian playing for the cheap seats) you can actually play tabletop games live over the inter-webs.  And people will watch you.

Great.  How does that sell books?

Well, you are being interesting.  Instead of that boring guy at the party who keeps telling you about his book you’re getting more and more sure you don’t want to read, instead of that guy… now you’re the life of the party.  You’re playing around and having fun and probably entertaining some people.  And this is how it works:  People like interesting people.  They like to listen to them.   And, they will buy the products of interesting people without those people even having to overtly sell them.

So here are two obstacles:

You don’t want to play D&D and you’re not Tech Savvy enough to set up all the doo-hickies that make podcasting work.

Number one:  Don’t play D&D.  Myself and five other writers are already doing that.  We host a podcast Checy Cahse called SciFi Writers Playing Old School D&D.  We even have celebrity guests on and we’ve got quite a following.  But, you can do something else.  Podcasts are great.  People love them.  They love listening to them on long drives or at night because TV has become such a general wasteland.  So, think of something interesting, maybe relating to the things you like to write about, but it doesn’t have to be (We are Science Fiction writers playing a FANTASY Role Playing Game) and do it.  Commit to a weekly show where you build your audience and your mailing list.  Have links in the podcast for people to check out your work and… you’ll probably sell more books depending on how interesting you reveal yourself to be.  NOTE:  Do no just use this as another forum to sell your books.  PROTIP:  Do anything, read the telephone book or Shakespeare aloud.  BUT DO NOT JUST SELL YOUR STUFF.

Okay, the techy part.  Here’s the deal.  The difference between a great pro-sounding podcast and the listening experience of a barrel full of cranky monkeys on Quaaludes is HANK GARNER.

Hank is our Producer.  He’s a Wizard (Note:  Hank not to be confused with actual wizard.)  He records, cuts (edits), synchs, adds music, and uploads our Podcast (Where we are being Oscar Wilde Levels of Interesting) to the world.  (Note:  The World is about 7 Billion People.  .0001 percent of that in book sales is enough for a boat.  A really big boat.  I like boats.)  Hank’s successful at the biz of podcasting.  He runs his own show called the Author Stories and gets big time guests like Matt-Damon-Buddy Andy Weir and noted Yachtsman Hugh Howey.  Well, he’s going full time into the making-podcasts-for-interesting-peeps business and if you’ve ever thought about being interesting, publicly, then Hank can get you started  and produce your interesting show.  Here’s his contact info: Hank Garner  Check out our podcast below and see what’s he’s done for us.  Also, give his show a listen.  Then decide for yourself how you want to be interesting and forget the tech part.  Give Hank a Heads-Up and make this thing happen.  That’s my advice on two steps you can take right now to start selling more books, and not be just another boring person shouting “Buy My Book!”
